Adopt a Fire Hydrant
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Captain Michael Deniger
January 2, 2019

In the fire service, time is extremely important. The ability to quickly locate a fire hydrant and connect to it to a fire truck is critical. In winter, snow can bury fire hydrants making it extremely difficult to locate them for use. We are asking for your help to consider adopting a specific fire hydrant!

What responsibilities does adopting a fire hydrant entail?
Adopting a hydrant would entail clearing snow from around the fire hydrant like in the photo shown. It also would entail clearing any high vegetation from around the hydrant to facilitate easy access without delay.

Why are we asking for your help?
We are asking for your help because our volunteer firefighters spend countless hours responding to and mitigating emergency calls throughout storms. By being able to focus our efforts on emergency response we are able to serve the citizens better, with less exhaustion and at a more rapid pace.

What are we asking for?
We are asking for vegetation and snow removal for the specific hydrant you adopt for a year.

Anybody who adopts a hydrant will receive an adoption certificate with your hydrant tag number and our sincerest thanks from our volunteer firefighters!

If you do help, please be aware of motor vehicle traffic and wear some high visibility clothing. Please ensure snow shoveled away from the hydrant goes behind the hydrant and doesn't pose a hazard on the sidewalk or roadway.

If you are interested, please email your name, address, phone number, and hydrant you are interested in adopting to MDeniger@hvwfd.org or PHawkins@hvwfd.org You can also stop by Fire Headquarters at 996 Main Street to fill out the information.
